Bulgaria and Greece have agreed to hold a joint exercise of their Special Forces of the common border to demonstrate unity and strength in the face of a potential surge in migration pressure, Bulgarian Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev has said.
"We have common conclusions regarding the refugee crisis and a recent surge in terrorist acts,” Nenchev said on Tuesday after a meeting with his Greek counterpart Panagiotis Kammenos in Sofia, according to a statement from the Bulgarian Defence Ministry.
The two countries share the view that they protect not only their own borders but the external border of the European Union as well, Nenchev added.
Nenchev and Kammenos have agreed to express common positions on “specific issues” at the European Union and the forthcoming October meeting of NATO, according to the statement. It didn't elaborate.
The meeting with Nenchev was part of Kammenos’ official visit to Bulgaria.
“The Greek side declared readiness to support a possible Bulgarian request to strengthen the presence of NATO forces in the Black Sea in order to deter a refugee flow toward our country,” the statement read.
“Our close defence cooperation, our common position in the EU and NATO outline a policy for stability for the Mediterranean, Europe and the entire Western world,” Kammenos said, according to the statement.
