Two large fires took place in two different parts of the Bulgarian capital overnight.

A fire in an abandoned train carriage in a depot near Poduyane railway station late on Tuesday night claimed the life of a 37-year-old man. It is believed that the man was homeless and used to live in the carriage.

Police officers and firefighters immediately arrived to the site and extinguished the fire. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred after incorrectly handling open fire.

In another incident, nine minibuses caught fire in a car park in the neighbourhood of Mladost early on Wednesday morning.

The exact cause of the fire has not been established yet, but authorities are suspecting the vehicles were set on fire deliberately.

The fire started from two or three of the vehicles and gradually spread to the rest. It is believed that some liquid might have been used for the fire to spread more rapidly.

The minibuses belonged to a transport firm and were used for the transportation of pupils. The owner of the firm is not known to have had any outstanding debts or conflicts with rival firms.
