Bulgaria: Suicide Attack Near US Consulate in Jeddah Injures 2 File photo

Two security officers were injured after a suspected suicide bomber detonated a device near the US Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, officials say.

Security guards approached a suspiciously looking man in the car park of a hospital next to a consulate and he blew himself up as they approached him, BBC quotes Interior Ministry spokesman Maj-Gen Mansour al-Turki as saying in a statement.

US officials said they were gathering more information about the incident.

In 2004, nine people died after the same consulate was attacked.

The United States marks Independence Day on Monday.

Separately, Kuwaiti authorities reported police had thwarted three attacks on the country that had been planned by the Islamic State (IS) group.

The developments come after Saturday's IS-claimed attack in Baghdad which left more than 165 dead, in what was the deadliest single attack in Iraq for the past year. At least 147 were left wounded.
