European Union ministers are making a final attempt to save depleted fish stocks by agreeing new fishing quotas. The BBC's environment correspondent Tim Hirsch says all sides now accept that there will have to be drastic cuts in the number of cod caught after warnings from scientists that stocks are dangerously low. Divisions remain about how to achieve the reductions with Britain, among others, resisting proposals to force fishermen to tie up their boats for three weeks in every month. Any agreement is likely to be unpopular with fishermen who may defy rules that would restrict how many days they can spend at sea. The Danish EU presidency extended the talks after four days of discussion failed to produce a result.
