Bulgaria loses an important EU ally in the face of the UK, but no apocalypse should be expected after its vote to leave, Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said on Friday.
London sided with Sofia on issues such as the integration of the Western Balkans and the role of Southeast Europe in the Energy Union, he told pubic broadcaster BNT's Friday talkshow, Panorama.
"We should build a clear and well-structured approach in our talks over [the situation of] Bulgarians in Great Britain. The assurances we have been receiving for the moment are that it will not change. If something does, it will be for those yet intending to emigrate to Britain," Mitov added.
Migration from Eastern Europe is thought to have been a key issue in the Leave campaign, with 52% of those who voted in the referendum backing an end to Britain's 43-year membership.
Mitov stressed that the EU needs to reassess its very foundations after Britain voted to leave, to address the lack of leadership and "make conclusions that European leaders had avoided for decades."
He pointed to the need for Europe to become less bureaucratic, remove obstacles to doing husiness and become more competitive.
But Mitov also predicted tough consequences for the UK following the referendum.
"The problem with populists is that they find it easy to make promises, but cannot deliver," he concluded.
