The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland and leader of the Sinn Fein party, Martin McGuinness, called on Friday for the holding of a border poll on the unification of Ireland.

This development comes after the results of Thursday's referendum on the UK's membership to the EU in which the majority of British voters (51.9 %) showed to be in favour of the UK to leave the EU.

Together with Scotland and London, the majority of voters in Northern Ireland (55.78 %) voted in favour of the UK to remain in the EU.

Sharing a land border with another EU member state, it is unknown how the relationship between Northern Ireland and Ireland will be affected after the majority of the UK voted in favour of Brexit.

There have been speculations for the erection of a physical border and passport control checks, while other proposals have suggested an effective border around mainland Great Britain which would shut off Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK.

Scotland's First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Nicola Sturgeon, said on Friday that Edinburgh is planning the holding of a second independence referendum.

In the words of Sturgeon, since 62 % of Scottish voters were in favour of the UK to remain in the EU, it was “democratically unacceptable” for Scotland to be taken out of the EU against its will.
