European Parliament President Martin Schulz has said that he deeply regretted the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

The United Kingdom since 40 years was wavering to be a fully fledged member or not. Now we have clarity for the United Kingdom to go on their own way,” Schulz told ITV on Friday.

With all the votes declared, the Leave side has won Thursday’s historic referendum by a margin of 52% to 48%.

Schulz also said that by deciding to exit the EU the UK has opted for severing links with the "biggest single market in the world".

ITV also quoted  the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, as saying thatthe outcome of the referendum was a "historic moment" but "not a moment for hysterical reactions".
