Bulgarian identity cards will carry an electronic identification component under legislative changes tentatively approved by Parliament on Wednesday.

The electronic microchip embedded in the new plastic cards will also contain personal details that will serve as electronic signature.

The electronic signature will allow Bulgarian citizens to access online services offered by the state, Deputy Interior Minister Krasimir Tsipov said earlier.

The new identity cards will be introduced gradually.

The changes to the Law on Bulgarian Identity Documents , which need to be approved on second reading  to take effect, are planned to enter into force from 1 January 2018.

By then the Ministry of the Interior is expected to have in place the technical means to issue the new documents.
