Bulgaria: Nearly 60 % of Bulgarians Intend to Vote in Forthcoming Presidential Elections

According to the latest opinion poll of Alpha Research released on Tuesday, Bulgarians are greatly interested in the forthcoming presidential elections in the autumn, with around 59 % of them intending to vote.

The poll was conducted between June 8 and 14 and reflects the main trends of public opinion between April and June.

There was continuing mistrust in the main state institutions, which provided ground for the rise of populist messages directed towards representative democracy.

The lack of officially announced candidates just three months before the presidential elections is harming the institution's image of impartiality and independence.

Respondents assessed positively the efforts of the government to diversify sources of natural gas, its EU funds absorption rate, construction of infrastructure projects and the fight against contraband.

However this was coupled with rise in critical views on the relations between the coalition partners, which resulted in a fall in the rating of the government.

The leader of the largest ruling GERB party, Boyko Borisov, remained the party leader with the highest approval rate.

In his capacity as prime minister, his ranking is close to the values exhibited during the end of the second year of his first term as prime minister (32 %).

The recently elected leader of the largest opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Korneliya Ninova, started with a surprisingly high approval rate of 18 %.

GERB remained the party with the largest electoral support, while BSP and the nationalist parties recorded small progress.

The junior coalition partner, the Reformist Bloc (RB), registered a drop in electoral support due to its participation in the government.

The second largest opposition Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) had under its usual levels of electoral support. It is unclear whether this was due to some of its supporters having switched their preferences for its splinter DOST.

Between March and June, the confidence in the government fell from 20 % to 18 %, while mistrust increased from 46 % to 48 %.

Regional Minister Lilyana Pavlova had the highest approval rating among ministers, followed by Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev.

Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov, Sports Minister Krasen Kralev, Environment Minister Ivelina Vasileva and Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov were among the ministers with higher levels of confidence than mistrust.

Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, Health Minister Petar Moskov, Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova, Economy Minister Bozhidar Lukarski and Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva were the ministers with the highest levels of mistrust.

Confidence in President Rosen Plevneliev stood at 24 %, while mistrust in him was 35 %. Every fourth respondent deemed his term as successful.

Parliament continued to lose public confidence, reaching a low of 7.5 %, while mistrust in it stood at 59 %.

In the event of early parliamentary elections, GERB would win with 21.9 % of the votes, followed by BSP with 12.8 %.

The party supporting the coalition government, the Patriotic Front (PF), and the junior coalition partner, RB, came next with almost equal level of electoral support – 4.9 %. DPS followed suit with 4.5 % of the votes.
