Bulgaria: IntMin Reports 47 % Drop in Illegal Crossings of Bulgarian-Turkish Border

In the fist five months of this year, Bulgarian border police officers detained 1858 illegal immigrants who have crossed into the country from Turkey.

Compared to the same period last year when 3535 illegal migrants had been detained, this represented a drop of 47 %.

Among the main factors contributing to the considerable decrease of illegal crossings from Turkey are: the ongoing specialised police operation, which includes border police officers and officers from the interior of the country; construction of the temporary fence along the border; the support of European border police officers under the authority of Frontex.

The interior ministry informed on Tuesday that in the last 24 hours, its officials prevented four attempts of a total of fifty immigrants to cross illegally into Bulgaria.
