Bulgaria claimed a bronze medal at the 32nd edition of the rhythmic gymnastics European championship held in Holon, Israel.

In the last day of the championship on Sunday, Bulgaria finished third in the two hoops and three pairs of clubs competition with 18.133 points.

The host Israel grabbed the gold medal with 18.316 points, followed by Spain with 18.233.

In the five ribbons competition also played on Sunday, Bulgaria finished fourth with 18.066 points. Belarus claimed the gold medal with 18.156 points, followed by Israel with 18.400 and Spain with 18.133.

Bulgaria was represented by Mihaela Maevska, Hristyana Todorova, Reneta Kamberova, Tsvetelina Naydenova and Lyubomira Kazanova.

These results come at a difficult time for the Bulgarian athletes as their fellow team member Tsvetelina Stoyanova remains in critical condition after falling from the sixth floor of a block of flats in the Sofia neighbourhood of Nadezhda last week.

It it still unclear what was the exact cause of the incident, but the main version of the investigating authorities is that Stoyanova attempted suicide. The version for an accidental fall has not been excluded yet.

Neighbours of the athlete claimed that she was very upset after she had not departed with the team for the European championship.

The rhythmic gymnastics federation dismissed these claims, saying that Stoyanova had decided to stay in Bulgaria on her own due to a medical problem.

The athlete, who sustained heavy injuries to her stomach, chest and vertebrae, remains in hospital.
