Traffic jams have been reported on Saturday at Bulgaria’s Makaza crossing on the border with Greece.

The Makaza-Nymphaea crossing, lying on the shortest land route linking Bulgaria with Greece’s Aegean Sea coast, is preferred by many Bulgarian holiday makers, particularly on summer weekends. Romanian tourists transiting Bulgaria en route to Greece also increasingly use it.

However, the existing two lanes in each direction have proved insufficient to tackle increased traffic in summer months.

Travellers had to wait  more than two hours at Makaza to enter Greece on Saturday morning, according to public broadcaster BNR.
