A Bulgarian car driver who beat a French citizen over the right of way in a road accident in Sofia, has been released from police custody on a BGN 500 (EUR 250) bail, the Prosecutor’s Office of Bulgaria announced on Thursday.

The Sofia Regional Prosecutor’s Office charged Emil Kostov with hooliganism and causing light bodily injury to French citizen P.M., a journalist, on Wednesday,  the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Kostov, who has a clean criminal record, faces a prison term of up to three years, if convicted.

According to local media reports the French citizen is a freelance photographer who has been living and working in Bulgaria for several years.

Beatings over actual over presumed violations of the right of way on the road increased recently in Bulgaria where deliberate neglect of traffic rules and dangerous driving often lead to fatalities.
