Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova has grabbed an award as the biggest contributor to Balkan tourism at a Montenegro conference, local media report.
Angelkova has been singled out as "Balkan Person of the Year 2015" by the Balkan Alliance of Hotel Associations (BAHA), one of the co-organizers of the conference, according to Montenegro's news website vijesti.
Titled "Destination as a Brand", the event in the coastal town of Herceg Novi is aimed at exploring ways to jointly promote the Balkans as a tourism product.
"For the first time there is a separate tourism ministry [in Bulgaria], and in so little time we have already gained such a recognition," Focus News Agency quotes her as saying. Angelkova added the award was for the entire tourism sector and all people working in it.
Participating countries are to discuss on Wednesday their views on how a common brand can be created to draw the attention of countries such as China, India, Japan and South Korea.
Montenegro's Tourism Minister Branimir Gvozdenovi? is quoted by Vijesti as saying the idea is to promote countries that are close to each other to distant markets.
Tourists of regions such as South or East Asia would usually look for trips to several countries when traveling to Europe.
Separately, Gvozdenovi? and Angelkova have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of tourism. The document also envisages a direct line between the two respective capitals, Podgorica and Sofia.
