UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova has been handed out the Global Women's Leadership Award at the Global Summit of Women 2016 in Poland.

The GSW team has said on Twitter the award is being given as a recongition for her work toward gender equality and promotion of girls' and women's education across the globe.

Bokova, who is also a candidate to head the United Nations next year, is quoted as warning that only 60 percent of countries around the world have achieved gender equality in primary education.

As regards secondary education, however, the share is even lower, at 38%, Bokova has said, adding the figures contribute to a weakening of the fabric of society.
