UNESCO Director General, Bulgarian Irina Bokova, comes 89th in the World's 100 Most Powerful Women list of Forbes, the website of the magazine shows.

Bokova and Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic (46th) are the only Eastern Europeans who made it into the Top 100.

"Fluent in five languages, and a vocal advocate of European unity, gender parity and education, Bokova is said to have a good chance at landing the UN's top post: A female Secretary-General, and one hailing from Eastern Europe, are both considered long overdue," part of her profile reads.

New Zealand's Helen Clark, who runs the UN Development Program and is thought to be one of the key rivals to Bokova for the office, ranks 22nd.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has headed the ranking, followed by prospective US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and Janet Yellen, who heads the US Federal Reserve.

As many as fifty of the women in the Top 100 are from the United States.

A change compared to previous years is that celebrities are off the list now, with Ellen Degeneres, Taylor Swift, and Angelina Jolie dropping out.

The list is available here.
