The partners in Bulgaria’s governing coalition plan to propose further amendments to election rules in an effort to address some of the deficiencies of recently adopted changes to the Electoral Code.

The number of polling stations in a foreign country, in which Bulgarian citizens will be able to cast ballots in future elections, will be capped at 35, the leader of the parliamentary faction of GERB party, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, told reporters in Parliament on Tuesday.

A polling station in foreign country will open if at least 60 Bulgarian voters, and not 100, have declared willingness to cast ballots at that station, Tsvetanov added.

The leader of the parliamentary group of the dominant partner in the coalition cabinet spoke shortly after Parliament rejected a presidential veto on changes to election rules which set limits to the number of polling stations that can be opened in Bulgarian embassies and consulates around the world.

According to Tsvetanov, the planned new amendments to election rules have been backed by GERB, the Reformist Bloc and the Patriotic Front.

Right-wing Reformist Bloc is the junior partner of GERB in the coalition cabinet. The nationalist Patriotic Front has no cabinet ministers but supports the minority coalition government in parliament.
