The Constitutional Court of Macedonia has provisionally suspended all preparations for the snap election due on June 05, local media report.

The step follows the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI)'s move to refer to the top court to contest the legitimacy of a decision to dissolve the country's National Assembly.

A final ruling of the court is not to be expected before next week due, according to local NOVA TV station.

Macedonia has been rocked by a recent scandal with President Gjorge Ivanov declaring blanket amnesty for all politicians and other figures involved in a massive wiretapping affair, less than two months before the vote.

His actions prompted an outcry from political parties and then from thousands of people who took to the streets to protest, many demanding that the vote be postponed.

The early election in Macedonia was further put into question by the fact that only one party - main ruling VMRO-DPMNE - had submitted proper papers before the deadline for parties to register for the vote.

According to daily Utrinski vesnik, unconfirmed reports suggest a possible date for the vote could be sometime in May of next year.
