Bulgaria: Bulgarian Household Income Rises 4.2% Y/Yin Q1, Expenditure up 0.9%

The total income average per household member in Bulgaria has increased by 4.2% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2016, reaching BGN 1,237, according to official data.

Wages and salaries led in a breakdown by source of income with a share of 57.1% of total income, followed by pensions (26.5%), self-employment (6.6%) and social benefits (2.8%), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) announced on Monday.

The total expenditure average per household member during the first quarter of the year was BGN 1,110, an increase of 0.9% compared with the same quarter of 2015.

The released figures were based on a quarterly, random-sample household budget survey, the NSI said.

About a third of the total expenditure per household member in Bulgaria during the first quarter of 2016 was on food (31.1%), followed by expenditure on housing (18.1%) and transport and communication (12.0%).

The consumption of vegetables and milk has increased in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the equivalent period of last year, while the consumption of bread and fruit has decreased.

The consumption of meat, yoghurt, cheese and eggs has remained unchanged, the NSI said.

The NSI describes a household as two or more persons who share one dwelling, have their meals together and share a common budget. One-person households are also included in the survey.
