The Road Infrastructure Agency (API) will spend BGN 8.8 M on repairing Bulgaria's road network in May.

Motorways and first-class roads will be repaired first, followed by second and third-class roads. The repair of the lower-class roads began in May and will continue throughout June.

The aim is to complete the repair works before the beginning of the summer season when people will embark on trips for their holidays.

A total of BGN 9.3 M were allocated to road repairs in April. The total sum allocated in the months of April and May is nearly BGN 18 M.

Despite the efforts of API to avoid repair works during the summer, traffic is expected to be hampered on Hemus motorway due to the renovation of the Eleshnitsa viaduct, which began on Wednesday and will last for approximately six months.

Two kilometres of the road lane in the direction of Varna have been closed for repair, with the traffic to be carried out in the other lane which was renovated last year.

The viaduct has been in exploitation since 1979. Since then no repair works have been done to it except last year's renovation of the road lane in the direction of Sofia.

The repair of the Vitinya and Echemishka tunnels on Hemus motorway will begin by the end of May.

The repair of the viaduct at the 41st kilometre of the motorway between the tunnels Echemishka and Topli dol is also to begin soon.

The repair works on Hemus motorway will be carried out with the funds provided by the government in the middle of April.

Repair works of the bridge above river Stryama at the 136th kilometre of Trakia motorway began on Thursday.

The repair of the road lane in the direction of Sofia should be completed by the middle of July, while the renovation of the other lane will begin in September to avoid hampering traffic in the direction of Burgas during the summer.
