Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov, on an official visit to Azerbaijan, held talks with the country’s President  Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Bilateral limks, energy projects and Azerbaijan’s relationship with the EU were in the focus of Mitov’s talks with Mamadyarov.

"The implementation of energy projects of mutual interest as well as projects of strategic  initiatives of the EU in this sector will contribute to the enhancement of bilateral economic contacts,” Mitov said during the meeting with Mamadyarov, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said in a news release.

Mitov also reiterated Bulgaria’s position that the Southern Gas Corridor project was of strategic importance for Bulgaria which is seeking options to diversify its gas supply sources and routes.

“This project will open opportunities not only for Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, but also for expanding Azerbaijan-European Union cooperation,” Mitov added, according to azernews.az.

Links between Sofia and Baku were discussed in talks between Daniel Mitov and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

Mitov noted that Bulgaria appreciated Aliyev’s position, who had said during a visit to Bulgaria in March 2015 that Azerbaijan was committed to the implementation of the strategic initiatives of the EU, including the Southern Gas Corridor, access to liquefied natural gas, the North-South gas interconnectors as well as the Vertical Gas Corridor initiative.

"Bulgaria has a strategic position geographically, which  suggests a considerable potential for diversification of sources and routes of gas and oil supplies," Mitov said, according to the  Bulgarian Foreign  Ministry.

Mitov also pointed to Bulgaria’s intention to become a gas distribution centre in the Balkans.

The supply of gas from Azerbaijan and other sources along  the Southern Gas Corridor is an integral part of and a prerequisite for the implementation of this strategic objective, Mitov added.

The Bulgarian foreign minister also highlighted that both governments were highly interested in the use of transnational multimodal transport and energy corridors between Europe and Asia.

To that end, Bulgaria supports the creation of a railway transport corridor from China through Central Asia to Europe, including the section Baku-Tbilisi-Poti-Varna, Mitov said.
