Bulgarian lawmakers are to address the issues of a veto imposed by President Rosen Plevneliev on the Electoral Code and details about a forthcoming referendum on the political system.

The items are on Wednesday and Thursday's agenda as MPs are reconvening after a 11-day-long Easter break.

The decision on Plevneliev's veto has become crucial over the past hours as the nationalist Patriotic Front coalition that backs the minority government of Bulgaria has tied its continued support for the cabinet to a rejection.

Plevneliev returned the Electoral Code sections that set restrictions to the numbers and procedures for opening polling stations for Bulgarians abroad. Prime Minister Boyko Borisov had earlier said his GERB party would not seek to override the veto.

A vote on the proposed six-point referendum is only to take place before full Parliament on Thursday as a draft has to be discussed at the Legal Affairs Committee the day before.

A national poll will have to take place as a petition submitted by Slavi's Show, one of Bulgaria's most popular TV shows, includes a number of signatures much bigger than the 400 000 that make it binding on Parliament to set a referendum.

However, a detailed proposal, with possible dates and amendments to the six questions, will have yet to be discussed.

Slavi Trifonov, the host of Slavi's Show, has included in the petition demands such as the introduction of a majority system, halving the number of MPs from 240 to 120, a slash in the amount of state subsidies to political parties to BGN 1 (up from BGN 11 per vote), direct election of regional directorates of the Interior Ministry and heads of district police departments, compulsory voting and e-voting (the latter two having been approved through amendments to the Electoral Code).
