Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Conservative GERB, the main party in Bulgaria's government, is meeting Tuesday to discuss the presidential veto on changes to the Electoral Code.
Prime Minister Boyko Borisov will also attend the meeting.
Rosen Plevneliev over the weekend returned for consideration texts of the amended code under which restrictions are introduced to the numbers of polling stations abroad. A cap was proposed by Patriotic Front, a nationalist coalition that backs the government, and passed by lawmakers after the PF argued the move was aimed at mitigating the impact of controlled vote in Turkey.
The amendments triggered a public outcry among Bulgarians living abroad, of whom around a million are eligible voters.
Ombudsman Maya Manolova met political leaders (after having held similar talks with GERB and nationalist Patriotic Front last week) of other parties on Monday to broker a discussion between them and representatives of Bulgarians voting abroad.
Three of the parties Manolova met throughout the day - also including the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Bulgarian Democratic Center (BDC) - said they would back the veto.
It was only leftist ABV party that did not immediately confirm its support for the President's move. ABV had earlier opposed compulsory voting and had said it was considering whether to withdraw from the cabinet if it was introduced. Plevneliev's objections, however, have no relation to compulsory voting.
Earlier Borisov himself had said he was supportive of the President's position.
