Bulgaria: Bulgarians Honor Victory Day in Front of Soviet Army Monument BGNES

Hundreds of Bulgarians laid wreaths in front of the Soviet Army Monument in the capital Sofia to mark Victory Day on Monday.

Wreaths were officially laid by embassies of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Venezuela, Vietnam, the Palestinian Authority, China, Kazakhstan, Syria, Pakistan, and Cuba.

Parties maintaining Bulgaria should take a more pro-Russian path, including socialist BSP, left-wing ABV, and nationalist Ataka, took part in the commemorations, also joining a procession across the central part of Sofia.

Around a dozen war veterans also attended.

Russia recognizes May 09, the date Nazi Germany capitulated to the Soviet Union in 1945, as a non-working day, and has celebrated it with more solemnity in the 15 years since Vladimir Putin first took over as President.

In Bulgaria, celebrations took place simultaneously with those marking Europe Day in Sofia and elsewhere.
