Bulgaria marked its Army Day on May 6 with a military parade involving about 1,300 servicemen and 35 tanks, howitzers, APCs, armoured cars and artillery pieces.

Twelve military aircraft - eight planes and four helicopters - flew at low altitudes above the site of the parade in the central part of Sofia.

Building a modern and efficient army to safeguard national security is a key priority for Bulgaria and the task must be brought to a successful conclusion, President Rosen Plevneliev said ahead of the parade, addressing officials and thousands of visitors.

Freedom, democracy, rule of law and human rights are supreme values which must be respected by everyone, Plevneliev said.

The essence of politics is to create conditions for people to be patriots who love their country and believe in democratic values rather than endorse ill-inspired nationalism promoting hatred towards those who are different, he added.
