Bulgarian prosecutors have requested permanent detention into police custody of four men charged with attempted murder during a scuffle between ethnic Bulgarians and Roma people in the town of Radnevo, in southern Bulgaria.

The four face jail terms of 15 to 20 years or life imprisonment if convicted.

The scuffle, which began over the right of way on a local road, took place on Monday and left three ethnic Bulgarian men with serious injuries following beating with batons. One of those injured was stabbed in the back with a knife, while another one had his jaw broken.

The incident sparked protest rallies by ethnic Bulgarians in Radnevo on Tuesday and Wednesday with protesters demanding justice for the victims of the beating.
