The vast share of asylum seekers granted protection last year in Bulgaria were Syrians, a Eurostat report shows.

In 2015, Bulgaria granted status to 5 320 people from Syria, who make up 95% of all affirmative status decisions in the country.

Nationals of Iraq come second (160 decisions) and stateless people (95).

Bulgaria was largely avoided by last year's peak of the migrant inflow from the Middle East in the summer and early autumn.

However, despite franking much lower in terms of granted protection to Middle Eastern migrants than than Germany (103 975) and Sweden (18 655) and has approved fewer requests than Austria (8 255) or the Netherlands (7 975), it approved in 2015 more requests of Syrians then Belgium (3 5680), Greece (3 160), Poland (240), Romania (335) or Slovenia (15), according to Eurostat.

A total of 330 000 asylum seekers were granted protection in Europe in 2015, an increase of 72% compared to 2014.
