An estimated 178,882 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea in 2016, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced on Tuesday.

“Latest confirmed fatalities stand at 737,” IOM said in a statement

The number of estimated arrivals in Greece through April 17 was 153,625, or 85% of the total. Italy followed with 24,581 arrivals, with much lower numbers registered in Spain (648) and Cyprus (28).

This compared with a total of  52,570 arrivals in Europe by sea between January 1 and April 30 of last year, including 22,408 to Greece and 26,228 to Italy.
