Police are still negotiating with Petar Kodzheykov, a retired police officer who barricaded himself at his home on Saturday evening with his wife, Bulgarian Interior Ministry officials say.

On Sunday morning the man fired shots at a police officer who was trying to convince him to leave the building. 

A specialized police unit entered his apartment shortly after the latter incident. Soon after noontime, his wife was taken out of the building on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance

Authorities say the man barricaded himself at his home after shooting at his daughter at around 14:00 on Saturday, who managed to run away from his home and alerted police.

A former police officer now aged 69, the man is thought to have mential disorder, but illegally possesses at least one gun, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio. He reportedly headed a district police department in Sofia.

Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Geori Kostov has told private bTV station that he handed over his legal firearm in 1996.

Petar Kodzheykov is reported as an uncle of Todor Kodzheykov, the former head of the National Security Service (NSO) which is in command of security details of state and government officials. The latter stepped down in February 2014.

In October of last year, he headed the 28th Air Detachment, an agency providing transport for the President, the Prime Minister, and other officials.

Daily 24 Chasa quotes a neighbor of his uncle, Petar, as saying the former police officer felt nostalgia for the Socialist years before the changes of November 1989. He also says Kodzheykov had suffered a stroke in recent years.
