A third bomb found at Zaventem airport, which was hit by two explosions earlier on Tuesday, has been defused by police in a controlled explosion.

The twin bombings at Zaventem were followed by an explosion at Maelbeek metro station close to the European quarter of Brussels.

Currently, Belgian police is searching for two suspects, one of whom was caught by security camera at the airport before the explosion, while the other fled the scene at Maelbeek.

According to the latest reports, the three explosions claimed the lives of at least 34 people and left hundreds other injured.

Earlier it has been reported, that an unexploded suicide belt and a Kalashnikov rifle have been found at the airport.

The Belgian capital is in lockdown, with the airport and the entire public transport system closed. Authorities have risen the terror alert to the highest possible fourth level.

Controlled explosions of suspicious packages and evacuation of buildings have been carried across Brussels.

The terrorist attacks come only days after the chief suspect in last year's November 13 attacks in Paris, Salah Abdeslam, was detained in a police raid in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek last week.

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement released by a news agency affiliated to the militant group.
