Bulgaria: Sofia Airport Steps Up Security after Brussels Attacks

Bulgarian Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski has said no flights scheduled from Sofia to Brussels are to take place as of the moment.

Speaking to reporters, he has added a en emergency meeting presided by Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova on Tuesday afternoon will be held to establish whether the level of security alert should be raised.

National flag carrier Bulgaria Air has canceled its Tuesday afternoon and evening flight to the Belgian capital, he has confirmed, shortly after the Sofia Airport's own statement.

WizzAir's flights to and from Brussels, however, are being carried out normally, with the company requiring from passengers departing from Brussels and Sofia to be at the airport, respectively, at least five and two hours earlier.

Moskovski has said traffic authorities (BULATSA) "stand ready" to take in diverted flights from other airports if necessary.

The minister has asserted security level is heightened and has been so for "at least a months" despite being lower than the one in Brussels which is "relevant to [a state of] war".

An additional number of police officers have been deployed to the two terminals at the Sofia Airport.
