Bulgaria has allocated a budget of BGN 106 000 to be spent on the campaign of its candidate for United Nations Secretary-General, Irina Bokova.

This was announced by the working group in charge of coordinating the activities of the Bulgarian nomination, which was presented in the foreign ministry on Monday.

The working group comprises sixteen diplomats, heads of leading directorates within the ministry as well as UN experts and specialists.

The group presented the work on the campaign of the Bulgarian candidate, noting the innovations and details concerning the selection procedure as well as the concrete tasks the foreign ministry plans to do.

The innovations in the selection procedure are aimed at increasing the transparency in the selection of the new Secretary-General.

The members of the working group also noted the balanced regional representation – with all five regional groups of the UN having right to an equal and balanced basis for presentation of their candidates.

They also highlighted the joint call of the presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly for gender equality, which constitutes the first such call in the history of the UN.

Another innovation in the selection procedure is that candidates will be subject to hearings in the General Assembly and the Security Council.

As regards the concrete work done by the foreign ministry, the working group was established immediately after the Bulgarian nomination had been announced in February and since then it has been working on the active preparation and promotion of the Bulgarian nomination.

The first sitting of the working group was held on February 20 with the participation of Bokova herself.

At this meeting, the participants clarified the stages, the main specifics of the procedure, the requirements towards the candidate and the work on the nomination and approved concrete plan and concept of the campaign.

An official in each Bulgarian embassy has been selected and entrusted with promoting and championing the country's candidate.

Priority has been placed on Bulgaria's permanent representation to the UN in New York, as well as those in Vienna and Geneva and the country's permanent representation to the EU in Brussels.
