At least fourteen people were killed and 43 other injured after a bus transporting foreign students crashed on a motorway between the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Valencia on Sunday.

Most of the 57 people on board were international students participating in the Erasmus exchange programme who were returning to Barcelona after visiting the Fallas fireworks festival in Valencia.

The crash occurred near the town of Freginals, 150 kilometres south of Barcelona, the BBC informs.

The nationalities of those killed and injured in the crash have not been confirmed yet. The possible cause of the accident has not been established yet.

Jordi Jane, Catalonia's regional interior minister, said the driver of the bus hit the railing on the right, swerved to the left and collided with a vehicle moving in the opposite direction, injuring two people inside it.

The driver of the bus survived the crash and has been taken to a local police station.

The Bulgarian foreign ministry informed that no Bulgarians were killed in the crash. However a 21-year-old Bulgarian female student from Burgas is among the injured.

The Bulgarian has a broken arm, but there is no risk for her life. The Bulgarian consul in Valencia has already contacted her and offered his assistance if the need arises.

The foreign ministry has no information on any other Bulgarians harmed in the accident.
