EC Plans Cuts in Fishing Catches

A plan for drastic cuts in catches is being discussed at a ministers meeting in Brussels, aiming to save dwindling stocks. The European Commission wants to reduce catches of endangered species such as cod and haddock by up to 80 % in the North Sea, Irish Sea and waters off Scotland's west coast. The cuts could damage the French and Spanish fishing industries, but scientists claim this could save the fish from virtual extinction within a year.
