Bulgarian Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev will table to the Council of Ministers the draft for the acquisition of a new multi-purpose fighter jet in several days.

Nenchev said this at the Graf Ignatievo air base on Thursday where he is attending the celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of its establishment.

Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Constantin Popov, former officers and veterans are also taking part in the celebrations.

Nenchev added that the tenders for the modernisation and acquisition of engines for MiG-29 fighter jets and their logistical support will be also started shortly.

The proposal for the acquisition of new fighter jets is contained in a 40-page report which will be reviewed by the parliament.

The defence minister expressed hope that by the end of the year the selection procedure on the supplier will be started.

Nenchev expects eight new fighter jets to be delivered by 2018 or 2019 at the latest, private bTV station quotes him as saying.
