Bulgarian police have detained a man suspected of making a false bomb threat that had led to extra security measures at Sofia International Airport on Wednesday night, the Ministry of the Interior said on Saturday.

The 20-year old man had called Sofia airport authorities from a public telephone booth in Stara Zagora, in southern Bulgaria. He claimed that a passenger with a bomb planted in his/her luggage would arrive at the airport on Wednesday night.

A search found no bomb and the airport resumed normal operations after midnight on Thursday. No motives for the false bomb threat have been announced.

The man has been detained for 72 hours by Stara Zagora police and an investigation has been launched, the ministry said in a statement.
