Arrivals of migrants and refugees to Italy and Greece across the Mediterranean routes have exceeded 150,000 between January 1 and March 10, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said.

Arrivals to the Greek islands continue with a daily average of some 2,000, the IOM said in its latest update on migrant inflow to Europe on Friday.

“Updated unofficial data of arrivals to Greece by sea since the start of 2015 now stands at over 985,000. At current levels of arrivals, IOM expects the total number of sea-borne migrants and refugees to Greece in the current emergency to reach the million-person mark by the end of next week,” IOM said.

The organization also noted that while migrant traffic to Greece still dominates, there have been much more arrivals to Italy this winter compared with either 2015 and 2014.

“That’s an indication that the Libya-to-Italy route remains a preferred migrant path,” the IOM said.
