Bulgaria: Bulgaria’s Army, Police to Conduct Joint Border Drills on Saturday

The joint trainingBorder 2016”, which will assess the readiness of Bulgaria’s army and police to react in the event of a heightened migrant pressure, will be conducted on Saturday in the region of Petrich, Sandanski and Kulata.

This was announced by the interior and defence ministries on Friday.

The preparations, including the transportation of equipment and preliminary trainings are taking place on Friday.

The training is aimed at coordinating the activities of the border police and army on guarding the border.

The deployment of the army to the border became possible after amendments to the Defence and Armed Forces Act approved by parliament last week, which allows servicemen to guard the border on an equal footing with border police.

At the regular meeting of the government on Wednesday, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov called on the interior and defence ministers to order the holding of joint trainings at the borders with Greece and Macedonia in order to assess the capacity of the police and army to deal with a heightened migrant pressure.

Representatives of the Bulgarian Red Cross will also participate in the training.

Refugees entering Bulgaria illegally will be returned to Greece and Turkey.
