Hindu Nationalists Win Gujarat Election

The ruling Hindu nationalist party has won a landslide victory in assembly elections in the western Indian state of Gujarat, scene of terrible communal violence earlier this year. An indefinite curfew was imposed in the state's Baroda district after clashes broke out between Hindu and Muslim supporters, as results were coming in. The Hindu nationalists recorded big gains in areas which witnessed religious violence targeting Muslims earlier this year. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken 125 seats in the 182-seat state assembly; seven more than last time. The main opposition Congress party won 52 seats.
