During a meeting in Sofia on Friday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and the leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES) Sergei Stanishev discussed the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe and the accession of Bulgaria to the Schengen Area.

They discussed the situation in Europe in the context of the ongoing migrant crisis and the measures taken at both national and European level on limiting its influence.

Borisov informed Stanishev of the discussion and decisions taken at the “Supporting Syria and the Region” international donors' conference, which took place in London last week.

During their meeting, the incumbent prime minister and his predecessor pointed to the contribution of Bulgaria towards the efforts of the international community on solving the world's humanitarian problems.

Borisov informed Stanishev of the talks he held with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, British Prime Minister David Cameron and US State Secretary John Kerry during his visit to London.

In the context of the migrant crisis, the two addressed the accession of Bulgaria to the Schengen Area.

They agreed that the situation in Europe in the last years is proving the need of returning the issue on the agenda as Bulgaria is attesting its capability to exercise effective control of the external borders of the EU on a daily basis.

Borisov expressed delight that they have common views on the topics of significance to Bulgaria's national interest.
