Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova has proposed to use the Army more extensively to help police guard the country’s borders.
The proposal will be enacted through changes in the Defence and Armed Forces Act which are being drafted at present, Bachvarova said on Wednesday after a meeting of the coalition government’s newly-founded consultative Development Council.
Bachvarova, who is Deputy Prime Minister in charge of coalition policies and state administration and head of the Development Council, said that her proposal has been made part of the National Defence Strategy blueprint approved by the partners in the government coalition.
Under the proposal, the Bulgarian military will be authorised to send personnel and equipment to assist border police in guarding Bulgaria’s border only in extraordinary and crisis circumstances, the government said in a statement.
Last month, Bulgaria’s government approved additional funding of up to BGN 34.1 M (EUR 17 M) for the continued construction of sections of a wire fence along the country’s border with Turkey designed to curb uncontrolled migrant inflow.
