French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has said he is leaving office, AFP news agency says.

The report has not been immediately confirmed.

After a cabinet meeting, Fabius has said he is leaving the government, with a successor due to be appointed Thursday, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports.

Fabius is to head the Constitutional Council, France's highest constitutional authority, under an agreement with French President Francois Hollande.

France 24 reports that the reshuffle is "an opportunity for Hollande to re-shape his team ahead of the 2017 presidential elections" amid low approval ratings for him and the government.
