A protest of Greek farmers closed the Ilinden-Exochi checkpoint located along the Bulgarian-Greek border on Monday.

The farmers blocked the passage through the checkpoint by placing agricultural machinery.

Border police informs that the passage through the checkpoint was halted at 11 o'clock EET, with the blockade expected to continue until 14:00 o'clock EET.

Greek farmers have been protesting in the past weeks against the pension reforms proposed by the government.

Their protests have led to temporary closures of the checkpoints along the Bulgarian-Greek border in the past week.

Also on Monday, farmers protesting in central Greece blocked the motorway between Athens and Thessaloniki at the Vale of Tempe.

The road was blocked at noon and the blockade is expected to last until the evening, daily Kathimerini informs.

Discontent farmers have held protests across the country in an attempt to force the Greek government to reconsider plans to increase their tax and social security contributions.

The planned general strike on Thursday is expected to severely affect public transport in the Greek capital.
