Lawmakers remain divided as Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva is expected to be the government's proposal to take over as Education Minister.

Last week Prime Minister Boyko Borisov asked incumbent Todor Tanev to step down, citing "recurring problems at the ministry and the sector."

Tanev is expected to submit his resignation on Monday, along with his team of deputies.

However, after leaving the office he will be appointed as Advisor to the Prime Minister on educational matters.

While the main ruling parties, center-right GERB and its junior coalition partner Reformist Bloc (RB) are expected to support the nomination of Kuneva, the nationalist Patriotic Front coalition, which backs the government, announced it was yet to decide.

After demanding the resignation of Tanev, Borisov said he would leave it to the RB to pick a successor. Separately, the Civic Council with the RB, a consultative body of lawmakers and other bloc members, is expected to hold a vote on the nomination of Kuneva later on Monday.

The largest opposition party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), is determined not to back Kuneva's candidacy. Its chair Mihail Mikov on Saturday told Darik Radio she would only add to the "destruction" of the Bulgarian education system that in his words began during the previous term in office of GERB (2009-2013).

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) on Monday said it would not back Kuneva or any other candidate because ot the "inadequate" power-sharing process within the governing coalition.
