The integration of the Turkish energy market with the European Union will be in the focus of the first EU-Turkey High-Level Energy Dialogue on Thursday and Friday, the European Commission has announced.

EU Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete would travel to Istanbul to enhance the EU’s strategic energy partnership with Turkey, the EU executive body said in a statement.

Miguel Arias Canete will discuss with the Turkish Energy Minister Berat Albayrak various aspects of the EU-Turkey partrnership in the energy area, including the development of the Southern Gas Corridor and the Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP) as well as electricity markets and interconnections.

Nuclear safety, developments in Turkey’s EU accession negotiations and the opening of Energy Chapter, and regional cooperation and integration in the Energy Community and the Mediterranean will also be on the agenda of the discussions.

Arias Canete commented:"Given its strategic location as transit country in the region, Turkey is a key partner for Europe's energy security and diversification. With the launch of the High-Level Energy Dialogue, Turkey and the EU are injecting renewed political momentum to our energy cooperation. This will lead to concrete actions and projects to our mutual benefit".

The discussions for stepping up partnership in the energy area come in the wake of EU-Turkey High Level Political Dialogue meeting held in Ankara on 25 January.
