With good bargains, many renovated hotels and a number of events Bulgaria "has turned professional" as a tourist destination, a German weekly media outlet writes.

Touristik Aktuell, which is specialized in writing about travels, events and destinations, quotes [DE] an official for German travel agency Schauinsland-Reisen as saying: "It smells like a Bulgarian summer."

Stefanie Berk, who heads British travel Giant Thomas Cook's Central Europe office, for her part notes the country is now "exceptionally attractive" for both young party makers and families.

The situation in Tunisia and Turkey, where many airlines are now avoiding to fly, and rising prices in Greece "play into Bulgaria's hands", with the country still being an alternative destination for those who "want one thing most of all: to lie idle on the beach".

Rolf-Dieter Maltzahn, who heads the Cologne branch of DER Touristik, another tourism company, is quoted as calling Bulgaria "the No.1 alternative to Tunisia."
