Motor traffic has resumed through Ilinden crossing at Bulgaria’s border with Greece at midday on Sunday following a two-hour closure by Greek farmers protesting income cuts proposed by the leftist-led government in Athens.
No queues had formed on the lanes during the two-hour road closure on Sunday morning, Bulgarian public radio BNR reported.
Greek farmers began a series of temporary road closures earlier this week to protest income cuts under pension reforms planned by their government in exchange for unpopular reforms demanded by the country’s bailout creditors.
Greek farmers have announced that they will block traffic at Promahonas opposite Bulgaria’s Kulata checkpoint from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday to press their demands, BNR said.
Farmers say the reforms will increase their social security contributions from 6.5% to 27% percent, while income tax will double to 26%, according to the AP.
