A Turkish Foreign Ministry official has argued Bulgaria has been exaggerating the impact of the migrant crisis, Today's Zaman reports.
"We could say that Bulgaria has in fact been exaggerating the situation because it has not been under any intense pressure from the migration flow," the English-language website quotes Ece Acarsoy, the head of department at the ministry's Deputy Directorate General for Migration, Asylum and Visas, as saying.
Acarsoy has made her comments at debates on an agreement to set up a joint contact center for border and customs controls signed by Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece's interior ministers back in May of last year. The center will be located in Kapitan Andreevo, a town close to Bulgaria's borders with both Turkey and Greece.
Ankara submitted the agreement for Parliament approval at the end of December.
Bulgaria has only been modestly affected by the migrant crisis compared to neighboring Turkey and Greece, with some 30 000 migrants having entered the country last year according to UN data. In Greece, the number topped 820 000 as of end-December. At the same time, Bulgaria has seen a bigger number of migrants enter compared to other EU external borders such as Spain (around 4000).
