Kulata border crossing between Bulgaria and Greece might might have to be sealed off in the days to come, with Greek farmers set to protest against changes to their tax and pension status, a Bulgarian official has warned.
Vladimir Pisanchev, Bulgaria's Consul General to Thessaloniki and a former head of the national security agency DANS, has told Focus News Agency "there is likelihood" of domestic protests that could leave the border crossing blockaded.
"We do not know yet with certainty whether it will happen," Pisanchev made clear.
Greek farmers have been voicing their disgruntlement with government planst to raise taxes and insurance contributions, but also with the lack of compensation for the losses incurred after Russia imposed a food imports embargo on the EU in August of 2014.
Kulata-Promachonas is a major border checkpoint with Greece, but travelers have several other options such as Ilinden-Exochi, Zlatograd-Termes or Makasa-Nimphea.
