Ten contemporary Bulgarian movies will be shown at the Filmoteca de Catalunya in Barcelona between January 5 and 29 as part of the thematic cycle “Bulgaria, the invisible Europe”.

The program includes ten Bulgarian feature and documentary films, which have been shot during the past 15 years.

The movies in the selection explore some of the key topics which have been in the focus of Bulgarian cinema during the period: socialism, post-socialism and transition, internal migration, social dissolution, lost generations, Bulgaria and Bulgarians through the eyes of the foreigners.

The ten selected movies are successful Bulgarian productions that have represented Bulgaria internationally in the last years: “Ziftdirected by Javor Gardev, “Even God Came To See Us” by Petar Popzlatev, “Viktoria” by Maya Vitkova, “Ave” by Konstantin Bojanov, “Shelter (Podslon)” by Dragomir Sholev, “The Color of the Chameleon” by Emil Hristov, “Emigrants (Emigranti)” by Ivaylo Hristov, “The Boy Who Was a King” by Andrey Paounov, “Christmas Tree Upside Down” by Vasil Zhivkov and “Tzvetanka” by Yulian Tabakov.

Bulgaria, the invisible Europe” will also be presented at Filmoteca Espanola in Madrid in the second half of February and the beginning of March with some slight changes and additions.

For the first time since 1989  Bulgarian cinema will be shown in Spain in its own context, presented by renowned local institutions and directed primarily towards the local audience.

The organisers of “Bulgaria, the invisible Europe” are Filmoteca de Catalunya, Filmoteca Espanola, the Bulgarian embassy in Spain with the support of the Bulgarian National Film Center and the State Culture Institute at the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.

More information about the event and an extended version of the program can be found on the official webpage of Filmoteca de Catalunya.
